WPAFB to detonate explosive charge in training exercise

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Specialists in handling bombs and other explosives plan to detonate a small explosive charge at about 6 p.m. Thursday at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as part of required training, the Air Force said.

“Depending on wind, humidity and cloud cover, residents of base housing and those traveling or living near Area A of the base may hear the very brief, one-second explosion,” Wright-Patterson officials said in a public statement.

It will involve detonation of up to five pounds of the military ordnance known as C-4, base officials said.

Personnel with the 88th Air Base Wing civil engineer directorate who specialize in handling and disposal of explosive ordnance are required to do periodic exercises with live explosives in order to keep their career training current, the Air Force said. The specialists are deployed in support of military operations, and are sometimes called upon by local law enforcement when hazardous items thought to be old military explosives or ammunition are discovered in nearby communities.
