Now open on Sunday: 7 things to know about one of downtown’s most popular shopping spots

The 2nd Street Market is one of downtown’s favorite places to shop.

Since June 3, the year-round market is now open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  It is also open Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A charming space. The market, located at 600 E. Second St., opened in 2001 in the former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad freight depot built in 1911. Of the more than 50 vendors currently at the market, 15 have been there since the start. They include All Souped Up, KJB Farms, Monco Enterprises and The Spice Rack & Bulk Foods. In 2016 the market had 385,000 visitors.

Food from around the world. Visitors can take a culinary trip around the world. French crepes, Thai spring rolls, New Zealand meat pies, Mediterranean moussaka and more are among the dishes on the menus at the eight food vendors. Good old fashioned comfort food and local, organic, hormone free dishes are also served up.

Breakfast jams. Each Saturday live music begins at 10 a.m.  and on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The offerings include guitarist Danny Voris, blues from Troubled Waters, 1960s-based rock from the Old Skool Duo and more music from the Blue Heron Trio, Keith Lykins and the Rum River Blend.

The best of the best. The 2nd Street Market was named the "Best Farmers Market" in the 2016 Best of Ohio Readers' Ballot conducted by Ohio Magazine. It also won the award the two previous years. Dayton Magazine awarded it the "Best of Farmers Market" award in 2017 and awarded "Best Farmers Market" and "Best Place to Buy Local" in's Best of 2017 balloting.

Traditional farmers market. Starting in June the fresh produce offerings expand outdoors for a traditional farmers market. The outdoor farmers who bring in vegetables, fruits and flowers are required to grow 100 percent of what they sell. The market accepts EBT/SNAP tokens, and Produce Perks year round.

Local, local, local. The 2nd Street Market is a one-stop spot for locally produced goods. Whether it's free range brown eggs, farm-raised chicken, lamb and pork, organic produce, freshly made baked goods or fresh milk from two local dairies, you can find most of your grocery items onsite. 

Artisans, pet treats and tulips. There's so much more than food. Fresh flowers, colorful alpaca sweaters, local artisans, a garden-themed gift shop and a Friends of the Humane Society booth that features a pet of the week and sells homemade treats are a sample of the unique items that can be found.
