UPDATE @ 5:30 p.m.
A Dayton man who called 911 to say he shot a man said the gunshot victim came to his door asking for extortion money.
“I got in a fight with him and I just shot him,” the caller said. “He knocked on the door. He came in and we were talking.”
Police said investigators are primarily calling this a home invasion. The shooter told detectives he knew the gunshot victim and let him inside while they talked about money.
That’s when the incident escalated, according to the 911 call. The caller said when he refused to hand over money, they began to fight. During the struggle, the caller said he took the man’s gun from him and shot him in the head, according to the call.
Although the shooting happened inside the apartment complex, police taped off the are in front.
“I looked outside and I didn’t really know, I seen like the fire truck, so I was just thinking somebody was going to the hospital and then I seen all the police cars,” said Tilani Edwards, who woke up to the scene at the apartment building next door to hers. “To me, it’s not really too shocking, you know, there’s a lot of stuff that goes on over there, but for somebody to get killed it’s like, wow, and it is like next door.”
The names of the gunshot victim and shooter have not been released.
Police said that ultimately it will be up to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether the shooter will be charged or the case presented to a grand jury for review.

UPDATE @ 4:25 p.m.
A woman who lives next to the building where the fatal shooting happened today saw the fire trucks outside and initially thought someone was ill or injured. Then Tilani Edwards noticed all the police activity and knew it was much worse.
“At first I was shocked because I was woken up to it,” she said, also noting that it was “next door.”
In the area there has been a lot of shots fired, she said, but it’s the first time she’s been aware of a shooting death. While Edwards said she agreed that violence is out of control in the Dayton area, she said she is not in fear for her safety or someone coming into her apartment.
“I stay in my home and try not to be in the midst of anything,” she said. “No one has ever bothered me or my kids … I don’t have any concerns.”
