How have TV and the web affected local culture?

From Micah Mattix at the American Conservative: "What is the real effect of television and the Internet on the quality of culture and human relations? Mixed bag. While the larger audience (and revenue) made possible by film and television have led to some pretty amazing shows, there are 10 "Honey Boo Boos" for every "Breaking Bad." Cable, satellite television and the Internet have also had a mostly negative effect on local cultures, replacing local traditions and making the need to experience the community of art directly … superfluous.
