Report of crash that killed BGSU students released

Less than 10 seconds after a state trooper spotted a vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 75, it crashed into a car carrying five sorority sisters.

The wrong-way driver, Winifred D. Lein, 69, of Perrysburg, and three of the sorority sisters were killed in the March 2 crash just outside of Bowling Green. Sarah Hammond, 21, a 2009 graduate of Greenon High School in Clark County, was one of the fatalities.

The initial 911 call of the wrong-way driver was received at 2:14 a.m., according to a news release. At 2:16 a.m., a trooper passed the vehicle, and 10 seconds later, the crash occurred.

Lein had checked into work at 5:52 p.m. and left work at 1:47 a.m., according to the release. Investigators have checked with local businesses in the Perrysburg, Rossford and Northwood area's around I-75, but haven't found any information about anyone having seen Lein prior to the crash, according to the release.

While the crash report is complete, the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate where the wrong-way driver entered I-75 and the speed of the vehicle. Toxicology reports on both drivers are still pending analysis, according to the release.

The accident occurred at a crest in the highway and he doubts the northbound student who was driving had any warning, according to reports.
