Richmond Officer Returns To Work After Falling Through Roof

A Richmond police officer is back on the job after he was seriously injured looking for a burglar.

Nicholas Guenther has been placed on light duty with the Richmond Police Department and hopes to be back on the streets this spring.

Guenther fell from the roof to the floor of the service at the Wetzel Family Auto Dealership in the early morning hours of Sept. 19.

Police Chief Kris Wolski said that Guenther was one of the first officers sent to the business on National Road after the department received an alarm. Officers found a car parked at the back of the lot with the engine running but didn't find anyone around it.

Officers thought a burglar might be on the building's roof. They asked the fire department to bring a ladder to the business. Once the ladder was in place, two officers and a firefighter climbed up onto the roof. One officer and the firefighter went one way, officer Guenther went the other direction, looking for the burglar.

The officer and the firefighter discovered a hole they thought the burglar might have used to get in and tried to tell Guenther but couldn't find him. They backtracked, discovered a second hole in the roof and when they looked down through it, spotted Guenther on the floor, obviously hurt.

Wolski said officers called in paramedics and described Guenther as being "semi-conscious and somewhat aware of what was going on around him, the paramedics treated him for head trauma."

Careflight eventually flew Guenther to Miami Valley Hospital, where he's listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Police said other officers spotted a burglary suspect in the parking lot on the ground between two cars. They believe he fell through the first hole in the roof, injuring his arm, hip and leg but then managed to crawl outside and collapse.

Paramedics took him to Reid Hospital in Richmond. He's since been transferred to Miami Valley Hospital.
