Sidney, Logan Co. Sobriety Checkpoints Ruled Successful

The Ohio State Patrol said sobriety checkpoints in Shelby and Logan counties over the weekend were very successful.

One was held in Sidney on Route 47 on Friday night and into Saturday morning. The Logan County checkpoint was held on Route 235 near Lakeview late Saturday night and into early Sunday morning.

The printed material that troopers gave to each motorist traveling through the checkpoint in Sidney and near Lakeview states that they regretted the inconvenience, but said the short time that the driver spent talking with a trooper or police officer helped to make the highways safer.

In Sidney, 371 cars passed through the checkpoint. Troopers said two motorists were arrested for drunken driving, two were diverted for further testing but not charged, and five were cited for seat belt violations.

In Logan County, 160 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint. Officials said two driver were charged with drunken driving, eight were diverted for further testing but not charged, and one was cited for driving with a suspended license.

The checkpoints were funded by a federal grant aimed to deter and intercept impaired drivers.
