Slain Miami Co. Deputy Still Remembered 20 Years Later

While there were no special services Sunday at either his grave or at the Police Officers Memorial on the grounds of the Miami County Courthouse in Troy, Sgt. Robert Elliott was on the minds of many this weekend.

Elliott was shot February 25, 1987, after a prisoner he was guarding at Stouder Memorial Hospital wrestled away Elliott's gun. Elliott died hours later.

And now, 20 years later, Sgt. Elliott's son Nate is a deputy sheriff with the Seneca County Sheriff's Department in Tiffin, Ohio. Nate was 3 years old when his father was killed.

Sunday morning, Sgt. Elliott's oldest daughter, Gloria, who was 11 at the time of the shooting, laid a half dozen artifical red roses at the grave of her father at Riverside Cemetery in Troy. She spent several minutes in silence.

Elliott's widow, Tammie Elliott-Gehle, is very active in the national organization called COPS (Concerns Of Police Survivors).
