Late in the afternoon, Beavercreek Twp. Fire Battalion Chief Nathan Hiester said the police officer assigned to the school reported the liquid in the jug “didn’t appear to be milk.”Hiester said the liquid appeared to be expanding the jug at “a slow rate.”
The Dayton Bomb Squad was called and sent a robot down the second-floor hallway as authorities monitored the action via a video feed. The bomb squad then requested Dayton Regional Haz-Mat.
Fiorita said the evacuation of the students to the adjacent football stadium was orderly.
A bomb squad member, dressed in a hazmat suit, placed the jug in a white 5-gallon bucket and carried it outside to an alcove of the school building. Another bomb squad member climbed a ladder onto the roof of the school and fired several rounds from a pellet gun into the jug “to relieve the pressure,” Hiester said.
The students left the stadium, most by bus, before 4 p.m. The school was opened to students to retrieve items from their lockers after 5 p.m. Classes are scheduled to resume Tuesday.
