Ramey said in court, “It’s just that I didn’t mean for this to happen. This was the worst day of my life. I have to relive it everyday of my life.”
He made those comments as he addressed the court before he was sentenced on a charge of having weapons under disability.
His acquittal on a more serious charge brought strong comments from those involved in the case.
Ramey was found not guilty on all charges, except the weapons charge for the March shooting of Charles Trent, 68, and his grandson, 29-year-old Anthony Donte Trent.
Investigators said Charles Trent died the following month.
Judge Douglas Rastatter said, “You may be able to fool a jury, but I was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that you retrieved that gun for retaliation.”
Ramey’s attorney, Jon Paul Rion said, “That they found him not guilty of aggravated murder, murder and attempted murder. That is their prerogative and they need to be respected.”
The judge sentenced Ramey to five years in prison, which was the maximum that he could have given, and he was ordered to pay court costs.
