Teen Falls Through Vacant Building Roof

A 13-year-old boy was seriously hurt on Sunday night when he fell through the roof of a decrepit, abandoned building in Richmond.

According to Richmond police and residents who live close to the old Gasworks building on East Main Street, the building is a nuisance and often becomes a playground for area children and teens.

Several residents said the building is not a place for fun, but an eyesore and a public danger that should be blocked off to avoid accidents like the one that happened Sunday.

An iWitness7 reporter submitted a video of Careflight arriving at the scene of the building after the 13-year-old, who was playing on the roof, fell 30 feet and hit the cement floor below.

Richmond police officials said a deputy found the boy when he heard yelling from inside the building. The deputy ran for help. Shortly thereafter, Careflight arrived and took the teen to Miami Valley Hospital.

There are “no trespassing” signs all over the building, Richmond police officers said, but this often does not stop teens from going inside. There are holes in the floor and the walls, and a tar pit inside the building. These dangers should make kids weary of entering the vacant building.

The Richmond Parks department was at the building on Monday to ensure all entrances of the building were blocked off, and Richmond police officials asked parents to tell their children to stay away from the building.
