Then and Now: Kuhns Building, corner of Main and Fourth Streets

What is believed to be one of the first commercial mail chutes in the United States is in the Benjamin F. Kuhns building, located at the corner of Fourth and Main streets in Dayton.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo gallery, which features past and present views of notable Dayton locations.

Built in 1882 in the Romanesque style, the Kuhns building is made from brick, stone and terra cotta and has a slate roof.

The Daniels & Meldrum retail store was housed on the first floor of the building in this photograph taken in 1889. Horses hitched to small wagons and buggies are waiting along the street outside.
