6 recent times children have been gunshot victims

It was the latest case of many in which children become gunshot victims. Here are other pre-teen victims — one as young as 15 months — also struck by bullets recently in the Miami Valley:

Unnamed boy, 11 | March 4, 2017 | Dayton 

A bullet went through a boy’s hand and into his groin when he was shot while playing basketball in the 1300 block of Jett Avenue. The victim told officers that an adult male, along with another juvenile male, approached him, pulled a gun, shot and fled. The boy’s injury was not considered life-threatening, and he was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The boy was hit in the leg by a bullet that bored through the walls of a house in the 1100 block of Dennison Avenue in Dayton. Police said at the time they believed the shooting to be retaliation for another shooting earlier the same afternoon that left a man dead.

Unnamed boy, 11 | Dec. 16, 2016 | Piqua 

A boy was shot in the neck with a stolen gun and pedaled his bicycle home after the shooting in Piqua that was ruled accidental by police. The boy was in the home of Levi Harrison in the 500 block of Gordon Street. “They were handling the firearm recklessly” when it fired, said Police Chief Bruce Jamison.

The boy was treated at Dayton Children’s Hospital, and Harrison was booking into the Miami County Jail on suspicion of felonious assault.

Elijah Johnson, 13-months | Jan. 14, 2016 | Dayton 

Johnson was in the arms of an armed adult when he was killed in a drive-by shooting. One witness said the boy was used as a human shield. Shawn D. Smith Jr. was convicted of murder in the toddler’s death and other charges for the shooting that also injured Isaiah Smith and Diana Hicks.

Maleki Parker, 5 | Nov. 7, 2015 | Dayton 

The 5-year-old was playing in his living room when he was shot in a drive-by-style shooting. He died two days later in the hospital. Illegal drug activity was also suspected in the drive-by-style shooting. Officers confiscated ammunition, handguns, clothing and drug paraphernalia from the home where he was shot. Maleki’s family asked that he be removed from life support.

Christian Green, 2 | Dec. 24, 2015 | Dayton 

Green was strapped in car seat on Christmas Eve in 2015 when he was struck in the head with a bullet shot by a man fighting with another. Green survived. Nickolai Gray Jr. was sentenced to seven years for his guilty pleas to charges of felonious assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm over a public roadway and having a weapon as a felon.
