The Chiefs drafted Russell in the third round this year out of Notre Dame, where he served a one-year suspension in 2014 for academic dishonesty. Russell returned to the Fighting Irish last fall and started 11 games with 60 tackles and two intercerptions before breaking his leg in the next to last regular season game.
To make room for Russell on the roster, the Bengals waived offensive lineman Trey Hopkins.
