Cincinnati Reds trade Tony Cingrani to contender

The Cincinnati Reds traded relief pitcher Tony Cingrani to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

Outfielder Scott Van Slyke and catcher Hendrik Clementina are the return for the fire-balling lefty.

Van Slyke, 31, is the son of former major-league pitcher Andy Van Slyke. He is 5 for 48 in 29 games with the Dodgers this season while hitting .242 in Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Clementina, who just turned 20, has played 24 games at rookie-level Ogden this season, posting an OPS of .994 in 92 at-bats.

Cingrani, 27, looked like a future star starter in his first full season in 2013, striking out 120 in 104 2/3 innings. He had a 2.92 ERA as a rookie but has never been quite the same.

Cingrani moved to the bullpen in 2015 and spent part of last season as the Reds closer, posting 17 saves.

He is not eligible for free agency until 2020, but his $1.8 million price tag for 2017 was sure to go up via arbitration next year, and he is no longer one of the team’s best relievers.

The team might have liked to have moved a few more assets at the deadline but ran into trouble when shortstop Zack Cozart and pitcher Scott Feldman both landed on the disabled list.
