The A-10 needed a home for the tournament for two seasons and wanted sites within its footprint, which stretches from Rhode Island to Virginia to Missouri.
“We have spent a lot of time, effort and energy for our strategic direction for the A-10,” said Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “There’s a lot of stuff going on in the intercollegiate sports environment. Division I men’s basketball is the No. 1 flagship top priority for the A-10 Conference. To have our championship located in a major metropolitan area with high population and demographics and also accessible to our constituents — our fans, alumni and student athletes — that was all very important in our selection process.”
The tournament has been held in Brooklyn the last two years. Prior to that, Atlantic City, N.J., hosted the event for six seasons. It was held at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati in 2005 and 2006 and at UD Arena in 2003 and 2004.
Nine cities submitted bids for the 2017 and 2018 tournaments, McGlade said.
