TOLEDO — The 2011 football season has been a rough ride for Miami University and the bumps got worse Saturday night.

The Toledo Rockets scored four consecutive touchdowns in the first 18 minutes and went on to flatten the RedHawks 49-28 at the Glass Bowl.

“You can’t spot them points like that,” said Miami quarterback Zac Dysert, who passed for 333 yards but also saw a first-quarter fumble turn into one of those early Toledo touchdowns.

Miami fell to 2-5, 1-2 in the MAC after seeing its two-game winning streak snapped. Toledo improved to 5-3, 4-0 MAC.

“To beat a team like Toledo you have to be hitting on all cylinders,” Miami coach Don Treadwell said, “and we certainly weren’t doing that today.”

Toledo’s first play on offense was a 34-yard run by David Fluellen, whose 4-yard touchdown run capped the drive. Toledo’s second drive ended with Morgan Williams’ 2-yard touchdown run.

On the first play of the Rockets’ third possession running back Adonis Thomas — making his first carry since suffering a broken arm at Syracuse on — sprinted 67 yards to set up Toledo’s third TD.

“After they scored those three quick touchdowns we settled down,” Miami safety Pat Hinkel said.

The RedHawks showed signs of life early in the second period when Dysert completed a 37-yard pass to Dawan Scott. Five plays later Dysert was sacked, the ball came out and linebacker Robert Bell picked it up. He raced the other way 55 yards for a touchdown.

“They’re a very good defensive team,” Treadwell said of the Rockets. “They put a lot of pressure on Zac.”

The RedHawks got on the board with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Dysert to Justin Semmes. Toledo answered with a 1-yard TD plunge by Williams, but Miami kept its hopes alive with an 80-yard drive which included a 71-yard reception by Nick Harwell and a 1-yard TD run by Erik Finklea to make it 35-14 at halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Toledo put the game out of reach with a pair of 93-yard touchdown drives.
