Commentary: Newton a refreshing quote

If I’m talking with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton every day, I’m loving it even though I know just about everything he says is as politically correct as any politician’s television or radio commercial.

Cam’s got something to say, and it’s a lot better than some of the same old, same old stuff other quarterbacks and players – and coaches – say.

Sure, for his team, Newton’s blast that, “The past couple of games has been the same script, by the same director,” is not going to play well, or his, “it’s kind of getting boring. This taste, this vibe….I’m not buying it. And I don’t know what it is, but something’s gotta change. Something’s going to have to change real fast.”

Or maybe you’d rather hear something from the Bengals’ Andy Dalton, like, “It’s always nice after a loss to come back and get back in the routine and try to put that one behind you. I think it’ll be good for us to have a little time to relax and get away from it a little bit and get refreshed for the next half of the season.”

I’m going to fall asleep on that one and get refreshed.

Here’s the thing. Newton’s rant was not good for team moral, but I’m not going to sit here and blast him for saying it. He made some news for his team even in defeat.

Dalton’s team is on a losing streak as well, but what he says isn’t going to get anyone fired up to listen to his next interview. He’s the good soldier, but the story line is bland.

I’m not telling you everyone should talk like Cam Newton, but I remember former Ohio State coach John Cooper once chiding me that he gave the media much more time than Woody Hayes, who specialized in 30-second interviews.

“But they were usually the best 30 seconds of my day,” I told Coop.
