Dayton Flyers to play Friday in first round of NCAA volleyball tournament

The Dayton Flyers (23-7) will play Louisville (21-8) in the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament on Friday in Champaign, Ill.

The winner will play host Illinois, the fourth-ranked team in the nation and the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament, or Eastern Michigan.

The 64-team field was announced Sunday night. Dayton watched the selection show at Top Golf in West Chester.

Dayton is 6-7 all time against Louisville. The teams last played in 2008.

Dayton earned a NCAA tournament berth by winning the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament on Nov. 18, beating Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 in Richmond, Va. It was the Flyers' 12th A-10 tournament title.

This will be Dayton’s 13th NCAA tournament appearance. It is 7-12 in the tournament. It has won its first-round game seven times but has never won a second-round game.

Dayton last played in the NCAA tournament in 2016 and lost 3-1 to Pittsburgh in the first round at Penn State. Dayton’s last NCAA tournament victory came in 2015 against Villanova.
