Elzey, Triick among inductees to county sports hall

Basketball legend Chris Elzey (Talawanda High School) and football standout Bill Triick (Middletown) are part of the 30th class of the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame.

They will be honored in ceremonies Nov. 27 at The Courtyard by Marriott in Hamilton.

Other new inductees will be Mark Current (Middletown), Ernie DeBord (Lakota High School), Troy Evans (Lakota), Lee Hart (Talawanda), Karl Heffner (Middletown-area golf), Marty New (Taft), Clinton Spearman (Garfield), Ricky Stone (Hamilton) and Bob Walton (Ross).

Elzey, generally considered the best basketball player in Talawanda history, played for the Braves under coach Steve Termeer from 1981-83, leading them to a 50-18 record in three seasons.

He was named the Mid-Miami League Player of the Year and to the All-Ohio second team as a senior and holds numerous school records, including career points with 1,273.

Elzey played four years at the University of Pennsylvania and professionally in Europe and Australia.

Triick was an outstanding all-around athlete at Middletown, where he played football, basketball and baseball.

He was the first quarterback to run the Run and Shoot offense, developed by Middie coach Glenn “Tiger” Ellison. Triick also was class president as a junior and senior.

Triick went onto play football, baseball, lacrosse and water polo at West Point, where the Cadets were the NCAA Eastern baseball champs in 1965. He served in Vietnam and was awarded two bronze star medals.

Tickets for the induction dinner are $25 and can be purchased in Hamilton at Tom’s Cigar Store. Only reserved tickets are available; there will be no walk-up sales the day of the event.

A general reception will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 and the induction program at 7.
