Fairmont grad key sub for national title-seeking Notre Dame

When Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw summons bench help, Fairmont High School graduate Kathryn Westbeld answers the call. A 6-foot-2 freshman for the Irish, Westbeld has been a key contributor in Notre Dame’s drive to a national championship.

She tallied four points and collected six rebounds in 20 minutes during a 66-65 defeat of South Carolina in Sunday’s NCAA Tournament semifinal at Tampa, Fla. She’ll likely be the first off the bench for the Irish (36-2) in tonight’s national championship against two-time defending champion Connecticut (37-1) at 8:30 p.m. (ESPN).

Westbeld has played in all 38 of the Irish games. She’s made 100 of 188 field goal attempts (.532 percent), 7 of 17 three-pointers (.412) and 54 of 76 free throws (.711). She ranks fourth on the team in rebounds with 171 (4.5), fourth in steals (40) and sixth in scoring (6.9).

It’s a rematch of the 2014 title game in which UConn beat Notre Dame 79-58. The Irish also lost to the Huskies last December, 76-58.

Westbeld was part of three straight Fairmont teams that played in Division I state title games and won in 2013.

  • Franklin's Luke Kennard and Shannon Coffee of Centerville have something in common: they have been named Mr. and Ms. OHSBCA.

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association recently voted both its highest individual honor. It’s the association’s equivalent to the Associated Press Mr. and Ms. Basketball, which Kennard has won the last two seasons.

Kennard has signed with Duke and Coffee with Stanford.

  • Four Springboro grads played key roles for their college basketball teams. Senior Olivia Schretzman (2011 grad) started every game as a two-time captain at Army (25-8). She averaged 6.2 points and 5.6 rebounds. Junior guard Katie Schubert (2012 grad) started every game for Tennessee Martin (22-11), averaging 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds.

Junior Lindsey Rosendale (2012 grad) played in 12 games for Otterbein. Sophomore Jen DeGraaf (2013 grad) played in 29 of 30 games for Penn State, averaging 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds.

  • Centerville point guard Mitch Balser has verbally committed to play basketball at Wooster. A 5-10 senior, Balser averaged 8.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the Elks (23-4). He led Centerville in assists (90), steals (56) and rebounds (120).
  • Wayne's Robert Landers has picked up where he left off after winning last spring's state track and field D-I shot put title. The senior was named the most valuable field athlete in the Beach Run Invitational at Myrtle Beach, S.C., last weekend after setting a meet record in the shot put (61 feet, 10.5 inches) and winning the hamer throw (182-3). He also was second in the discus (150-8).

Those monster efforts helped the Warriors boys tie for second. Wayne’s girls were fifth. Wayne is back in action by hosting the Warriors Relays at 4 p.m. today.

A nose guard, Landers landed a scholarship to play football at Ohio State after excelling in Wayne’s postseason drive to the D-I state title game last season. He’s the older brother of Wayne junior Trey Landers, a starter on Wayne’s D-I state champion boys basketball team. Trey has verbally committed to Dayton.
