Coldwater dominates in victory over Versailes

Siefring scores 4 TDs as Coldwater wins 9th straight over Versailles.

DAYTON — Coldwater football coach Chip Otten admits he was a little paranoid heading into his squad’s Division V regional semifinal at Welcome Stadium Friday night.

After all, Versailles had led Otten’s group 19-6 in the third quarter of their first meeting in Week 5. And, it is always hard to beat a team twice in one season.

Luckily for the Cavaliers, Caleb Siefring is one of them.

Siefring hauled in scoring passes of 75, 66, 11 and 23 yards from Austin Bruns and returned an interception 48 yards for a score as Coldwater claimed its ninth straight win over Versailles, 43-0.

“When you beat someone the first time and you play them again, you get a little paranoid,” Otten said after Coldwater improved to 9-3 and advanced to play the winner of Marion Pleasant and West Jefferson for the Region 20 title. “Are the guys going to think they can just go out there and win again? Versailles had been playing good football, they beat a Minster team we lost to, so you get a little paranoid.”

The Tigers drove into Coldwater territory on the opening drive, and were back in business after the Cavaliers fumbled on their first possession. However, quarterback Nick Campbell left with an injury as Versailles turned it over on downs. On the first play of their second series, Siefring got behind the defense, hauled in a Bruns pass and went 75 yards for the score.

That opened the flood gates as Coldwater led 26-0 after a quarter and ran off 40 straight points.

“That was a big momentum change,” Siefring said after catching four passes for 175 yards. “We were down about turning it over on our first drive.”

With Campbell out, the Tigers recorded just one more first down in the first half and didn’t cross midfield again. Coldwater picked off a rotation of three Tiger quarterbacks six times, with Siefring and Josh Huber having two each, and held Versailles to 124 yards total offense.
