Ohio State football practice access canceled in wake of Urban Meyer investigation

Ohio State football is circling the wagons.

In an unsurprising move, the school announced Thursday all interviews with players and coaches are canceled and practices are closed until further notice.

The university is committed to supporting our student-athletes as they prepare for the upcoming semester. Due to the ongoing investigation, football coaches and student-athletes will not be available for interviews until further notice and all practices will be closed. We anticipate providing an update on availability Monday."

The first day of practice for the 2018 season is set for Friday afternoon.

The beginning of practice was scheduled to be open for video and some assistant coaches and players were to be available for interviews afterward.

The only other scheduled media event was an appearance by Urban Meyer late Tuesday morning.

That was set because Big Ten Network is to be in town.

Everything is on hold now because Meyer has been put on administrative leave following reports he knew about domestic abuse committed by one of his assistant coaches.

Ryan Day has been named interim head coach while the university conducts an investigation into the reports.

Going back to the days of Jim Tressel (who was hired in 2001), media access has typically been fairly limited for Ohio State football.

Since Meyer became coach prior to the 2012 season, the preseason has generally included two or three player availabilities per week with Meyer speaking once per week as well.

There are also generally a handful of practice viewing windows that close before anything interesting happens.

During the season, no practices are open to viewing but Meyer speaks to local reporters twice a week with players also available twice a week (not counting game days).
