Reports: George Washington fires Mike Lonergan

There was surprising news in Atlantic 10 men’s basketball late Friday night as reports surfaced that George Washington fired head coach Mike Lonergan.

Dan Wokken, of USA Today, first reported the news at 10:29 p.m. Eleven minutes later, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported the players and remaining coaches on staff had still not been told of the firing. As of this morning, George Washington has not officially announced the news.

Chick Hernandez, of CSN, reported this morning Lonergan has not been fired yet.

George Washington started an investigation into Lonergan in July when the Washington Post reported a player had complained Lonergan had verbally and emotionally abused him. According to the story, Lonergan's behavior had been investigated before. Other players defended Lonergan in a follow-up story by the Washington Post.

Lonergan coached the Colonials for six seasons, finishing 97-70. They were 28-10 last season and return their top scorer, Tyler Cavanaugh.

The Dayton Flyers play George Washington once in the 2016-17 season, and it’s the last game of the regular season: March 4, at George Washington.
