Prior to the start of the Middletown City Senior Golf Championships, Mark Augspurger joked with defending champ Tim Sorrows that it was not going to be a cake walk.

With Augspurger and Tal Selby eligible for the senior tourney for the first time this year, Augspurger felt the young bucks had a chance to make some noise.

“I told him he may win it this year, but it wouldn’t be by 15 strokes,” Augspurger said with a laugh Saturday at Weatherwax Golf Course.

Heading into the final day at Weatherwax, Sorrows is poised to win his fifth straight senior title, but as Augspurger projected, it won’t be a walk in the park.

Sorrows carded an even-par 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Augspurger and 2005 champ Steve Downs, both of whom are at 147. Selby, the leader after the first day, sits three strokes back.

Sorrows began the day six strokes back of Selby, but a solid round put him in the lead heading into the final day.

“It is a three-day tournament,” Sorrows said. “I knew I had to make up a few because if Tal had got more than a six-stroke lead it would be a tough row to hoe. He didn’t play well. I just had to focus on staying in the moment and focusing on the shot I had.”

However, focusing on each shot was harder to do with temperatures in or near triple digits once again, he said.

For Augspurger, the temperatures during his morning and afternoon on the course were a breath of fresh air after teeing off in the afternoon yesterday. Augspurger began to struggle on the 16th hole yesterday, but was able to finish with a 76. He fired a 72 on Saturday.

Back issues kept Downs on the shelf until he played his first full round of the season on day one of the tournament. “I would try to go out and hit and I would have to quit, but it is feeling good now,” Downs said. “I’m very happy,” Downs said. “I was just wanting to have a good showing. The game of golf doesn’t care who you are. It is going to be shot by shot and hole by hole and you just have to keep it going. It is going to be interesting and it will be fun playing with these guys. It’s a good thing to be playing in that last group.”

The leaders will tee off at 9:36 a.m.
