“It was a sweet tournament to watch,” Grant said. “I know he was the only guy to break 80 the first day. That was a fun experience.”
Six years later, Grant, now a senior at Shawnee, hopes to match his brother. The D-II tournament once again takes place at Northstar on Oct. 13-14.
“That’d be really sweet just to say that both of us are state champions,” Grant said. “I don’t know how many brothers can say that. I don’t want to talk about that too much because I still have to get the work done.”
EARLIER COVERAGE: Engle makes big splash as freshman
Engle took his first step toward getting there by winning the sectional tournament Tuesday at Reid Park with a round of 72. He’ll be one of the favorites at the district tournament at Beavercreek Golf Club on Oct. 5.
“That’s definitely the goal — to win state,” Grant said. “I know I’ve got a chance to really do something special. I’ve been practicing really hard, and my game’s been coming around. I’m seeing some good results. I still have to get farther with my results to keep improving, but I definitely think the state championship is within my reach. I just need to be dedicated to it and not take anything for granted.”
Engle will have his teammates with him at the district tournament: senior Camden VanVelzor; juniors Nicholas Jacobson and and Justin McDonald; and sophomore Connor Lyons. Shawnee advanced with a fourth-place finish at the sectional, trailing Greenon, Graham and Northwestern.
Shawnee, coached by Charles Mowell, won the Central Buckeye Conference tournament by one stroke over Jonathan Alder. Engle shot a 70 to earn medalist honors by five strokes. He won the Kenton Trail Division Player of the Year award for the fourth straight season.
“We started out as underdogs,” Engle said, “and we’ve had a really great season. We kind of struggled early in the CBC but came on strong at the end.”
Engle hopes his season finishes on a similar note. A year ago, he qualified for state for the first time and finished 10th overall with a score of 80-73—153 on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.
“It’s definitely good to have the experience of playing there,” Engle said. “I’m going to go into districts confident and just play the best I can, and hopefully I can make it on to state and go from there.”
Engle already knows where he’ll play at the next level. He committed to Ohio State in August. He’ll follow his brother, who ended his college career with the Buckeyes last spring.
“I’m excited to play for Ohio State and to follow him,” Engle said. “I’ve always been a huge Buckeyes fan, growing up close to Columbus. It’s a dream come true to be able to play for Ohio State.”
