Volleyball: Dayton earns NCAA berth by winning third straight A-10 tournament title

Flyers have won 12 straight matches

The top-seeded The Dayton Flyers won their third straight Atlantic 10 Conference volleyball tournament championship on Saturday, beating No. 2 seed Virginia Commonwealth 25-15, 26-24, 25-19 at the Frericks Center.

The Flyers (13-1) will take a 12-match winning streak into the NCAA tournament. They will make their 15th NCAA tournament appearance. This was their 14th A-10 tournament title since 2003. They have won three titles in a row four times.

Dayton’s Jamie Peterson was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. She led the team with 14 kills Saturday. Amelia Moore had 10. Lexie Almodovar had nine.

Moore led the team with eight blocks. Bridget Doherty had 34 assists. Maura Collins had a team-best 18 digs.

Moore, Doherty and Almodovar also made the all-tournament team.

This was the fourth straight year Dayton and VCU have played in the championship game. VCU won the first championship meeting in 2017 in Pittsburgh, and Dayton beat VCU in 2018 in Richmond, Va., and in 2019 in Kingston, R.I.

Dayton advanced to the championship game by beating No. 4 seed Fordham 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 in the semifinals Friday. VCU beat No. 3 seed Rhode Island 25-17, 25-15, 25-19.

The 48-team NCAA tournament bracket will be announced at 4 p.m. Sunday on ESPNU.
