One of the area’s top basketball prospects has narrowed his list of potential colleges.

Wayne point guard Lawrent Rice announced this week he is down to a final eight of Georgetown, Kansas State, Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame, VCU, Xavier and Ohio State.

“Excited for what the future holds!” he added to the post on social media.

The 6-3, 170-pound Rice is second in the GWOC in scoring (19.0 points per game), assists (6.1) and steals (3.6) while also grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game and shooting 46.6 percent from the field for the 7-5 Warriors.

Ohio State offered Rice last summer, but he told 247Sports.com over the weekend the Buckeyes seem to have slowed their pursuit of him since receiving a verbal commitment from four-star combo guard George Washington III of Louisville Christian Academy in November.

“With Ohio State, they haven’t been recruiting me the most,” Rice said. “They have a guard in this class from Louisville who committed. Things have kind of slowed down with them.”

Rice is a three-star prospect and the No. 3 player in Ohio in the class of 2023 per 247Sports Composite rankings that are compiled from a variety of different sources.

The top-ranked junior in the state is Cincinnati Taft wing Rayon Griffith while Columbus Africentric wing Dailyn Swain is No. 2, and Centerville point guard Gabe Cupps is fourth.

247Sports’ in-house rankings have Rice and Cupps flipped in the state with Griffith and Swain still Nos. 1-2.

Cupps, who has verbally committed to Indiana, leads the GWOC in assists.

As for current seniors, the top-rated local player is Hamilton center Sage Tolentino, who is headed to Cincinnati next season.

Illinois signee Sencire Harris of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary is the top-rated senior in the state followed by Cincinnati Woodward point guard Paul McMillan IV, who is uncommitted.
