Under Mercer’s tutelage, Wright State hitters led the HL in 10 offensive categories (hits, walks, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, triples, home runs, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies and hit batsmen) while setting a school record with 46 victories in 2016 en route to a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Finals.
“The accomplishments of our baseball team the last three seasons have been tremendous and historic,” WSU athletic director Bob Grant said. “Jeff has been a huge part of all of those accomplishments. I’m thrilled that he will be our new head coach. His unique background as a player and coach here and elsewhere make him a perfect fit to continue to build on the tremendous success we’ve already achieved. He fits our culture perfectly. I can’t wait for him to put his mark on our baseball program.”
Prior to returning to his alma mater to become the first WSU grad to lead the baseball program, Mercer spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky and one at the University of Michigan.
