Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Wilmington are in Wayne County, Ind. surveying damages left from Saturday night’s storm.

Witnesses described seeing a tornado touch down on the ground and one submitted video indicates the same.

Todd Shobe, meteorologist at NWS in Wilmington, took photos and talked to residents Sunday morning around the Richmond area.

Shobe said he’s trying to determine if the damages indicate a tornado, straightline winds or a downburst.

At the outset of conducting the survey, Shobe said “there is evidence that it’s tornadic damage.”

“There is some evidence to go along with the eyewitness reports and the video footage that we’ve seen that would tend to indicate that we have possible tornadic damage here,” he said.

That evidence includes a report from the emergency management agency director that roof panels were blown off and traveled several miles away.

The weather service will issue a finding after the survey is complete and all the evidence is evaluated.

A barn lost its roof and trees were downed this evening after a possible tornado formed in Indiana.

The National Weather Service will conduct a storm survey Sunday to confirm whether a twister touched down.

Law enforcement reported spotting a tornado just before 6:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of U.S. 35 in Wayne County, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS issued a tornado warning for Wayne County and Preble and Darke counties in Ohio, which was lifted after 10 minutes.

Wayne County Emergency Management Agency officials said storm damage appeared to start in the area of Indiana 38 and Round Barn Road and then head northeast, and that trained weather spotters reported a tornado touched down near the 3900 block of Round Barn Road, the Palladium-Item reported.

Wayne County residents said tonight’s storms produced heavy rain at times, high winds and hail.

“It started raining really hard and there was about maybe 10 seconds of fail and then that quit and then the winds just went crazy,” said Patty Kruger, who believes a tornado did strike the area. “When you look at how quick it hit and the damage and you follow the pattern in the field behind the house, where the neighbors have a tree down, you can see the trail of the path it was taking.”
