Bon-Ton ekes out small sales gain

YORK, PA. — The parent of Elder-Beerman Stores said Thursday sales at stores open at least a year increased 0.1 percent in December.

However, Bon-Ton Stores also said total sales fell 0.1 percent by the same percentage during the five-week period ended Jan. 1, reaching $510.8 million, versus $511.1 million.

Tony Buccina, vice chairman and president of merchandising, said severe winter weather in some markets cut into the company’s sales.

Fine jewelry, home accessories, shoes and furniture ranked among the best-selling items, Buccina said in a statement. The company’s online sales doubled compared to a year ago, Buccina said.

Year-to-date comparable store sales increased 1 percent. At the same time, total sales increased 0.7 percent to $2.8 billion, compared to 800.4 million compared with $2.78 billion for the same period last year.

Shares of Bon-Ton (Nasdaq: BONT) were trading at $12.40, up 41 cents, or 3.2 percent in the morning session.
