Feds raid Caterpillar offices

Federal authorities have raided the corporate offices of Caterpillar Inc., numerous media reports say.

Federal prosecutors in Peoria, Ill., working with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. office of inspector general, the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Commerce office of export enforcement, made unannounced visits on at least three of the company’s corporate offices Thursday.

Caterpillar Chief Executive Jim Umpleby said the company believes the search is tied to a Switzerland-based subsidiary, which he acknowledged has been investigated for three years.

“Because of the broad nature of today’s warrant, we don’t have enough information at this time to provide a full understanding of the authorities’ intent,” Umpleby wrote in an internal memo to employees, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Caterpillar’s 1.5-million-square-foot distribution center in Clayton is one of the company’s largest logistics facilities.
