Holiday travel stress-cutting tips

John North is president of the Dayton Better Business Bureau.

For the first time in 12 years, holiday travel may see a decrease, according to AAA. Almost 64 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles this Christmas.

Your Better Business Bureau offers some tips to keep you safe when hitting the road.

Lower gas prices this year could help spread the holiday cheer. According to AAA, gas prices are 35 cents lower than they were at this time last year, down from $3.27 to $2.92 a gallon nationally. Locally, this time last year, gas prices hovered around $3.08 a gallon and are now about $2.75 a gallon.

When making plans this holiday season, your BBB offers these holiday travel tips:

• Make travel plans early and avoid driving at peak travel times, such as traveling two days before or after Christmas.

• Use discount travel websites. If you plan on renting a car or booking a hotel room, consider bundling them with your airfare to save money.

• Take your car in for a checkup. Be sure to check the fluid levels, tire pressure, wipers, etc.

• Pack an emergency kit. It should include a flashlight, batteries, first-aid kit, food and water.

• Always pay with a credit card because you can dispute the charges. Never pay with cash.

• Verify your reservations with the companies directly before your trip.

• Buckle up and don’t text and drive. Pull over to a safe place if you need to text or make a call.

• Charge your cell phone before you leave.

• Make sure you have your insurance card in case of an accident.

• Check the local weather at your destination.

• Get plenty of rest if you plan to drive, so you’re not a hazard to yourself or others.

• Watch your speed and remember the rules of the road. Don’t tailgate or rely primarily on your mirrors when changing lanes. Turn around and check your blind spot.

Remember, if you’re one on the millions taking to the skies, make sure you have all necessary documents including plane tickets and identification. Also, check with airline about how many bags can be checked or carried on the plane. Check parking rates at the airport, it may be a wise decision to take a taxi, shuttle or have a family member or friend drop you off at the airport.
