Kroger eyes new, larger store in Troy

Kroger has submitted preliminary plans to the city of Troy showing it intends to replace its existing grocery store at 751 W. Market St. (Ohio 55) with a new “Marketplace” concept Kroger that would be twice its size and would be built on an adjacent lot at 731 W. Market St.

Kroger officials would not confirm their plans, however.

“This is a project we are working on, however, plans are not final,” Kroger spokeswoman Rachael Betzler said Friday. “I should know more in early December.”

Preliminiary plans filed with the city of Troy show a proposed Kroger Marketplace of 124,439 square to be built to the east of the existing 60,000-square-foot Kroger store, according to Tim Davis, Troy’s planning and zoning manager.

The existing Kroger store would remain open until construction of the new store is complete, Davis said. An existing Kroger gas station will remain intact. Plans call for demolition of a smaller building near Market Street that previously housed a video store.

The new store would be laid out perpendicular to West Market Street, with its entrance facing west. The company is buying two tracts of 1.4 acres and 0.3 acres to accommodate the project, he said.

Kroger has not yet filed detailed engineering plans required for a building permit from Miami County.
