Mason-based Anthem to cut 51 Youngstown jobs

DAYTON — Wellpoint, Inc., parent of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio, will cut 51 jobs by the end of May at its Youngstown location.

Anthem, whose Ohio headquarters are in Mason, cited law changes affecting the private fee-for-service marketplace in a Feb. 10 letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services’ rapid response section. The letter is required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification act.

Specifically, the Youngstown unit being shut down dealt with a Medicare Advantage product, Anthem spokeswoman Kim Ashley said.

The cuts will leave the Youngstown location with about 230 employees. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has 4,000 associates in Ohio overall, including 2,600 in Mason, Cincinnati and Miamisburg.

Ashley said the closing “will not impact Mason whatsoever.” She also said Wellpoint and Anthem are committed to Youngstown.

The affected jobs include primarily customer care representatives and other administrative positions. Some employees may be able to secure other jobs that open up at Youngstown, Ashley said.
