Horner succeeds Tom Burkhardt, who retires this month after 22 years of service.
Horner said he was attracted to UD because of its strong enrollment, healthy finances, strong leadership and Catholic character. In addition, his wife, Sarah, was raised in Dayton, where her parents still reside. The couple was married here.
At UD, Horner will oversee an annual budget of $405.7 million, an endowment of $518.2 million and net assets of nearly $1.5 billion, officials said.
