Optivus-Premier proton deal said to be near

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — Optivus Proton Therapy Inc. and Premier Health Partners are working out final details of a partnership to handle the staffing of a proposed proton beam radiation treatment center in Miami Twp., an Optivus spokeswoman said.

Optivus spokeswoman Jenny Camper acknowledged, however, that efforts are still under way to secure financing for the $170 million project.

“They’re committed to the project,” Camper said of Optivus.

Optivus is the lead sponsor in the American Cancer Society’s local Cattle Baron’s Ball Aug. 28 at the home of David and Shery Oakes in Centerville.

Kettering Medical Center, a Premier competitor, is working with San Francisco-based American Shared Hospital Services to invest up to $80 million in their own nonprofit proton therapy center, which they hope to open within three years at either its Southern Boulevard campus or on 48 acres at the Austin Boulevard-Interstate 75 interchange.

Hospital officials say the project would create up to 100 new KMC jobs.

The head of the National Association for Proton Therapy in Washington, D.C. has said he would be surprised if enough financing exists to support two proton beam radiation treatment centers in Dayton or any other community.
