Store to pay fans if Ohio State wins national championship

The Ohio State football team has attracted some new fans in its quest to win the national championship.

If the Buckeyes win the national championship on Jan. 12 by seven points or more, Morris Home Furniture Store and Ashley’s Furniture Home Store will refund all the money paid by consumers on purchases of $1,999 or more on furniture, mattresses or accessories.

Consumers must make the purchases before 7 p.m. Dec. 30 at the stores locations in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton.

Ohio State plays Alabama in the semifinals on Jan. 1 in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. With a win, the Buckeyes will play Jan. 12 against the winner of Oregon and Florida State.

Rob Klaben, vice president of marketing and advertising at Morris Home Furniture Store, said the promotion has been so successful they extended it for another week.

“Right before Christmas, most people aren’t thinking of buying furniture,” he said. “They’re thinking of buying little things to go under the Christmas tree.”

Klaben said the company chose to support the Buckeyes because they have been a sort of “Cinderella” team this year.

A third-party company is underwriting the promotion and will pay out the money if the team wins, Klaben said. Customers will have to return to the store to fill out a claim form to get their money back.

Klaben did not know the amount of revenue the stores had made because of the promotion, but said more than 700 people have shopped because of the promotion.

“We knew Columbus was going to be a good market because it’s the team’s home,” Klaben said. “But Cincinnati and Dayton have been good markets too.”
