Updated gathering spaces adapt to casual or formal lifestyles

Recent kitchen and bath updates, new flooring on nearly all of the main floor, recently painted walls and replaced light fixtures add a fresh new look to the 1988 two-story home at 2900 Merrimont Drive in Troy.

“The floors have been replaced in every (main floor) room within the last couple of years,” said Shirley Snyder of Galbreath Realtors. “The kitchen is completely remodeled with new cabinets, granite counters and stainless-steel appliances, and all the baths have been updated. It feels like you’re getting a newer home with all the work that has been done,” she said.

With a flexible floor plan of more than 3,220 square feet of living space, Snyder has listed this home for $374,900.

Original hardwood flooring with a rich nut-like stain adds a touch of elegance in the T-style central entry, which leads into living, dining and family rooms. Sidelights with muntins flank the nine-paneled front door. White spindles and stained handrails edge the open staircase to the upper level.

At the end of the entry the family room boasts updated hardwood flooring with a natural stain. Two sets of tall corner windows flank the brick fireplace and raised hearth. Near the opening into the living room a wet bar sits in an alcove.

Tall casement windows are arranged in groupings on three walls of the living room, where neutral walls and carpet create the backdrop for any color scheme.

“This big living room with its wide opening to the family room allows for versatile space—it can go casual or formal, or a mix of both,” said Snyder. “You could put a game table in it or make it a music room. There is a good flow between these two rooms,” she said.

On the opposite side of the entry, a contemporary chandelier centers the dining room, where three vertical windows are boxed in a grouping facing the front yard. If adopting a more casual style for the home, Snyder suggests, “The dining room could easily be used as a study.”

The kitchen is a showcase for a smart remodel. Granite counters and creamy white cabinets with upper moldings and soft-close drawers surround the U-shaped work space. GE stainless-steel appliances include the smooth-surface range, dishwasher and microwave oven.

A large dining table could be accommodated in the breakfast area, which connects through French doors to the adjacent screened porch. Porcelain plank tile flooring makes a nice contrast with exposed-brick lower walls. Roll-up shades are installed at each of the surrounding windows, and there is access to the patio.

In an area off the kitchen, the washer and dryer are hidden by folding doors. The half-bath is updated with a raised vanity. A pantry closet sits near the door to the oversized, two-car garage, which has finished walls and a service door to the patio.

At the top of the staircase is a loft area, where a boxed window adds natural light. Neutral carpet extends into each of the bedrooms.

Updating of the private bath in the main bedroom suite features a granite counter atop a raised double vanity, which is recessed into an alcove beside a built-in, floor-to-ceiling linen cabinet. Hanging spaces wrap around the walk-in closet. Large tile with a stone look covers the floor. Surrounding the jetted tub is matching tile enhanced with a mosaic-tile border. The shower is in a separate room.

Three remaining bedrooms share the hall bath, which has a tub-and-shower combination and is updated with a granite-topped raised vanity. A second linen closet is in the hall, where a whole-house fan is installed in the ceiling.

Snyder said that the stucco on the outside was replaced with concrete board and that the exterior wood trim has a fresh coat of paint.

“(This location) offers easy access to Interstates 75 and 70, the YMCA, (and it is) midway between Troy and Tipp City for shopping and dining,” she said. “It’s a great home for everyday living and entertaining.”
