Longtime Muse Machine director dies in New York

The Muse Machine family is mourning the loss of David Dusing, who died Tuesday evening in New York City.

For more than 20 years, Dusing — along with director and choreographer Nat Horne — oversaw the annual student musical productions at the Victoria Theatre.

In addition to serving as music director and co-director for most of the Muse musicals over the years, he also co-created the Muse summer concerts, arranging almost every piece of music.

“Although David was a consummate musician and director, he cared first and foremost about the performers as human beings,” said Doug Merk, director of student programs for Muse Machine. “His kindness, support and humor alongside his expertise didn’t just create great performances — it supported and elevated thousands of young people as they moved forward into the next chapters of their lives.”

Dusing began as music director of Muse Machine’s “South Pacific” in 1992. He directed and co-directed the next 20 shows, including two versions of “Peter Pan”, “Beauty and the Beast” and the 2010 production of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Merk said a memorial for Dusing is in the planning stages.
