Tom and Karla Kennedy have owned the Cakery for four years.
“We’re land locked in our current location (in Riverside),” Tom Kennedy said. “We have been getting numbers of requests to come to the upper Miami Valley.”
The Troy location opened the first week of June.
“We’ve had a lot of people come in,” Kennedy said. “We’ve had a couple hundred people already.”
Some of the best-selling items include lemon cupcakes with key lime filling, buckeyes, strawberry swirl cake and cupcakes.
“We have something called cake bombs, and they are basically a ball of cake that is dipped in Ghirardelli dipping chocolate,” Kennedy said. “I call it our sleeper item. Our goal is to serve the best product we can to our customer. Try us; I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. We don’t want to be as good as the other people; we want to be better.”
What the business does: "Our saying is 'If you need a cake, you go grocery store; for good cake, go to a bakery, if you need a great cake, you come to The Cakery'."
What makes the business stand out: "The look and the taste; most people say it's the taste. We have the 2012 Pillsbury grand decorator on our staff. We hand make our buttercream, and our cakes are generally more moist. We're more dainty on our decorations."
How the business started: "It started 16 years ago, and four years after that, Mickey Rutherford bought it. We bought it from Mickey four years ago. My daughter (Jamie Burchfield) has been with The Cakery since 2002. We bought it because the owners were getting ready to retire."
Interesting fact: "We have a very loyal following. People come a long way for our product; they come from Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Columbus. We must be doing something right."
