She quickly pumped out Cheeky Meat Pies favorites like the Kiwi Classic — chunks of roast in an onion gravy with Monterrey Jack cheese encased in a flaky crust — and the Naughty Bird — chicken breast and basmti rice in a spicy Indian sauce.
Each of the stuffed lunchtime puff pastries cost $5.
I tried the Kiwi Classic and savored how the rich cheese and gravy blended.
Riley Kimball, Edwards’s cohort behind the counter, said the Naughty Bird has quickly became a crowd favorite.
There are several other chicken pies and a ground beef pie on the menu. The vegetarian option is decribed as "spicy Indian flavored potatoes and peas encased in a tasty flaky crust."
Aaron Horn hails from New Zealand where handheld meat pie is an iconic food. Bethany Horn lived in New Zealand several years and met her husband, Edwards said.
The couple recently launched Silver Fern Café at RiverScape MetroPark and began operating the Fountain Snack Bar at the park.
The cafe serves meat pies and other New Zealand dishes as well as and American-style wraps, burgers, smoothies and other items 11 a.m. to 3 p.m Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It has special hours during festivals, concerts and other events held at the park.
Cheeky Meat Pies’ food truck can be seen at local festivals and farms markets.
“We are all over the place,” Edwards said. “Everybody loves the pies.”
What do you think? Have you tried Cheeky Meat Pies?
