Woodford Reserve Watermelon Julep from kentuckyderby.com
1 1/4 ounce Woodford Reserve
1/2 ounce simple syrup
5-6 mint leaves
5-6 squares of fresh watermelon
Crushed ice
There’s no replacing a classic cocktail, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be altered.
Joseph Head, the manager of Century: A Bourbon Bar, demonstrates how to make a Watermelon Mint Julep in the video shown here.
He used a variation of the recipe on the Kentucky Derby show below. Instead of Woodford Reserve, Head used Old Forester bourbon. He also opted to use more mint leaves.
The result was a well-balanced summertime treat.
Head and his staff plan to serve Watermelon Mint Julep as part of the bars Kentucky Derby party Saturday, May 3.
