Motel Beds talk about new album

It’s been a year-and-a-half since Misra Records released Motel Beds’ career-spanning compilation, “These Are the Days Gone By.” Three years have passed since the Dayton indie band’s last studio album, “Dumb Gold,” came out — but the wait for new music is nearly over.

Motel Bends anticipated new album, “Mind Glitter,” is being released Oct. 23.

PJ Paslosky (vocals), Tommy Cooper (guitar), Tod Weidner (bass) and Ian Kaplan (drums) recently sat down at Tank’s Bar and Grill in Dayton to discuss “Mind Glitter.” Darryl Robbins (guitar) was not present.

Cooper: “It’ll be out on vinyl and CD, thanks to Anyway Records in Columbus, and digital, thanks to Al Gore. The album comes out officially on Oct. 23, but we’ll have copies at the release party at Blind Bob’s on Oct. 16.”

Weidner: “At the time we thought we owed Misra one more record, which we later found out wasn’t the case. We were on somebody else’s release schedule, so we were able to take our time and dissect the songs a little more than we’re used to doing. We didn’t just barf things up on tape like we often do.”

Paslosky: “We haven’t taken that long since ‘Feelings,’ but we were in for the long haul, since we had a long schedule to work with. We were also playing shows, too, so that was part of it.”

Kaplan: “There were a lot of changes happening while we were making the record, but maybe that was just my stuff. I do remember revising quite a bit. We changed the feel of a couple of songs even though we didn’t end up using them. We’d just go, ‘How would this work?’ Sometimes it would work and other times it wouldn’t work at all.”

Cooper: “We’re happy with how the record came out. It’s different, but it fits in the catalog.”

Paslosky: “We’ve put out a pretty decent amount of albums, and we’re proud of them. The only thing we really want to do is play music together. When it’s all said and done, we’ll have these albums we’re proud of. Ultimately, we try to think about, in the realm of Dayton bands like the Ohio Players or Guided by Voices, we’re still pretty young in this game. We’ve still got a lot of time to put in. We’ve got another 20 years. We need to do it long enough to embarrass our kids, and then we’ll tap out.”
