Oprah wowed by Dayton father of 28’s exchange with Iyanla

CommentaryNathaniel J. Smith appears on OWN’s “Iyanla: Fix My Life”

A Dayton man who says he fathered 28 children with nearly 20 women was the focus of a segment of “Iyanla: Fix My Life” on OWN that wowed Oprah Winfrey, the network’s owner.

"One of the most powerful exchanges I've ever seen on TV, and I've seen a lot. Iyanla Vanzant speaks to men and their multiple babies/mamas. Powerful #FixMyLife," Winfrey (or someone posting on her behalf) wrote on Facebook in a post previewing the show.

The episode that included Nathaniel J. Smith aired Saturday.

We last spoke to Smith, a local poet and performer who goes by the stage names Brave Nate, FlexLuthor and Hustle Simmons, in September of 2013 after he appeared on the syndicated show "Divorce Court."

In recent weeks, Vanzant’s show has followed the story of Jay Williams, a father of 34 children with 17 women.

Smith appeared briefly in an early follow-up episode that included a handful of the mothers of Williams’ children.

On Saturday’s episode, Smith spoke of his feelings of bitterness, helplessness, shame and guilt when probed by Vanzant.

Based on Winfrey’s Facebook responses to Facebook fans, the tear-jerking episode moved her.

Ronald Fields "Never seen or felt anything like this in my life. I had the biggest breakthrough of life as a man. This is what TV should be about!!!"

Oprah Winfrey "Mr. Fields thank you. This IS a great use of TV and the reason I started a network. #OWN."

Donna Duke "Women give too much to men they don't know, they rely on men who aren't reliable, trust men who aren't trustworthy. Why? Because they think they NEED a man? Women need to wake up. Trust themselves. Rely on themselves, and get to know a man before getting pregnant from him."

Oprah Winfrey "Agree women need to #womanup."
