OXFORD— Anyone who has ever wondered what goes on at the ice rink once all the lights are off and the doors have been locked for the night will have the opportunity to find out at this year’s ice show at Miami University.
The Annual Spring Ice Show will take place at 7:30 p.m. April 15 and at 3 p.m. April 16 at the Goggin Ice Arena, 610 S. Oak Street, Oxford.
Rachel Funk, assistant skating director at Goggin, said this year’s show, which is called “Night at the Goggin,” reminds her of the film “Night at the Museum,” starring Ben Stiller.
Funk said the ice show is loosely based on the same idea because it’s about the experience that a Zamboni driver has as he inspects the locker rooms after midnight.
“The locker rooms all kind of come to life,” Funk said.
Lindsay Fenton, director of programs at Goggin, said that each locker room will present its own adventure.
During the show, the Zamboni driver will be Jon Elliott, who drives in between periods of the RedHawk hockey games.
“He is pretty famous here on the Oxford Campus,” Fenton said.
The four-act show will also feature more than 200 skaters ranging from the ages of 4 to 70.
“We have people that just started skating in January and we have world level skaters,” Fenton said.
Skaters will include several Miami University synchronized skating teams, the Oxford skating club, community members who take lessons at Goggin, the Miami ice skating club, junior RedHawks (the community hockey program) and the varsity hockey team.
The first act, which will entail some spooky tunes, will feature the Zamboni driver’s scary experience in the maintenance room.
The theme of the second act, which is set in the synchronized skating team’s locker room, will represent all the international traveling that the Miami University synchronized skating team does.
Featuring a performance about the 1980 Olympic “miracle on ice,” the third act, set in the coach’s locker room, will take the audience on a fluorescent journey through the 80s. The third act will take the audience even further back in time to the 50s and 60s.
The fourth and final act of the show will entail music from Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Michael Buble, Funk said. The act, set in the hockey team’s locker room, is about the Miami University hockey team.
“We are highlighting how they are kind of rock stars on campus,” Funk said.
