You can see rare WWII aircraft today at Dayton Wright Brothers Airport

Historic World War II aircraft on a nationwide tour will land in Dayton next week.

The national Wings of Freedom Tour, a flying tribute to the flight crews who manned them, will be at Dayton Wright Brothers Airport, 10600 N. Springboro Pike, Aug. 7 to Aug. 9.

Five airplanes, the WWII Vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, Curtiss P40 Warhawk, North American B-25 Mitchell and a P-51 Mustang will be on site.

Visitors will have a chance to explore the planes inside and out during the event. The up-close tour is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

The B-17, B-25 and B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission, according to a release. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s, B-25s and B-24s safely brought their crews home.

Visitors can take a 30-minute flight aboard the rare aircraft. Flights on the B-17 or B-24 are $450 per person.

For those who want “stick time” flight training is available. P-51 flight training is $2,400 for a half hour and $3,400 for a full hour. P-40 Warhawk flight training is $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. B-25 flights are $400 per person.

Hours of ground tours and display are Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
