These do-it-yourself coasters are not only perfect to have around your house, but they are a wonderful gift you can customize and give out throughout the entire year. Plus, since there is an edge on the coasters, you never have to worry about the sweat from your glass dripping off your coaster and onto your furniture again.
You will need
Purchased:
• 4 two-inch terra cotta planter dishes — 89 cents each at Michael’s Arts and Crafts
• 1 12-inch by 12-inch sheet of decorative scrapbook paper — 99 cents at Michael’s Arts and Crafts
• Black stamp pad — $1 at Dollar Tree
• Black acrylic paint — $1.29 at Michael’s Arts and Crafts
Items I already had around the house:
• Clear spray sealer
• Mod Podge
• Foam brushes
• Scissors
• Pencil
Directions
1. Clean each dish and remove all tags.
2. Sitting your dish upright, trace the bottom of the dish onto your scrapbook paper using a pencil.
3. Make a circle for each dish.
4. Paint each dish using your black acrylic paint.
5. Let dry and put on a second coat. Dry and put on a third coat.
6. Cut the circles out of your scrapbook paper. Place each one in the bottom of your dish to ensure they lay flat and do not curl up the edges. You may have to trim circles slightly to ensure they fit properly.
7. Using your ink pad, lightly rub the entire edge of each paper circle. This will give it an aged look. Add as little or as much ink as you like, depending on your preference.
8. With your dish facing upright, put Mod Podge on the bottom of your dish and place your decorative paper on top.
9. Smooth out any air bubbles underneath the paper.
10. Place a coat of ModPodge over the paper and put a thick coat around the edges of the paper to seal in the openings.
11. Let the Mod Podge dry and do at least 2 to 3 more coats. This will fully protect the paper from any water.
12. Once everything is dry, spray on a coat of clear sealer to make everything water resistant.
For just $6.84, you have a set of four coasters that can reflect your unique style. A set of four coasters can also make a wonderful gift. Put them in a basket with two mugs and you have a unique and personalized gift that you can give for less than $10.
