DIY under $10: customize a bar of soap

I love things that smell good, and for around $1 per bar of soap, you can make customized bar soap that fits with your favorite smells and colors.

I chose to do a coffee soap. Make sure to use the soap base with the suspension formula in it so that the grounds of coffee stay dispersed throughout the soap and won’t sink to the bottom of the mold.

For one pack of soap base, you can make about 12 bars of soap.

These would be great for around the house and also as housewarming gifts for your family and friends.

Supplies needed

Items I purchased:

• Goat’s milk soap base with suspension formula — $9.99 at Michael’s Arts and Crafts

• Soap molds — $2.29 at Michael’s Arts and Crafts for a pack of three

Items I already had:

• Glass dish

• Spoon

• Ground coffee

Directions

1. Remove one-fourth of your soap base and place it in a microwave safe dish.

2. Melt the soap in the microwave starting with 30 seconds. Stir and then continue microwaving in 10-second intervals until the soap base is fully melted.

3. Add in two tablespoons of coffee grounds. If you have some, you can also add in soap fragrances such as vanilla or almond to add more fragrance to your soap.

4. Pour the melted soap mixture into your soap molds.

5. Let soap molds stand for at least 45 minutes.

6. Remove from molds and your soap is ready to go!
