Colors and fabrics keep pieces inviting for today's tastes
"People have gotten away from the heavy tapestry patterns and are turning to a lighter feel and color palette," Kirchner said.
Fabrics have changed from brocades, silks and tweeds to muslin, linen, poplin and microfiber, she said.
Don't overlook rich colors like browns and grays. Gray, in particular, is the new neutral.
Key pieces
A sofa, perhaps with skirting, a pair of high-backed or club chairs, and end tables coordinating with a coffee/cocktail table are the basics, Kirchner said. The tables can have the same legs and be well-matched, but with different shapes to their tops for a more eclectic look. A sofa table or console is helpful for supporting a pair of matching or complementary lamps.
Far from passé
Classic/traditional styling, like its name implies, has withstood the test of time and is far from disappearing.
Punch it up with accessories
Kirchner said color makes any room come alive, with brighter shades often appealing to today's buyers to punch up neutral backgrounds. Accessories like candles and sconces provide classic accents. She advised that throwing in some funky pieces in fun colors can breathe new life into a traditional décor.
